The LMC initiates programs to encourage student reading, including:
- Gung-Ho for Genres – students are encouraged to read a different genre each month. Students who read books in the targeted genre are eligible to win prizes.
- Black-Eyed Susan – Students participate in a state-wide competition to pick the best loved books in Maryland. Second-grade classes read the books during their library periods; older students read the books independently.
- Scholastic Book Fair – The LMC hosts a yearly Scholastic Book Fair that offers student the ability to purchase books at reasonable prices.
- Barnes & Noble BookFair – At Roland Park night at the Barnes & Noble Book Store in Towson, parents, teachers, students and friends celebrate the joy of reading. Because the library receives a generous percentage of money spent that evening, this event allows the library to quickly respond to student and faculty requests for books.
- Author Visits – The LMC center hosts authors who talk to students about their writing process and their latest books. In addition, the LMC works with the Children’s Book Store and the Enoch Pratt Library to offer students the opportunity to participate in author visits that they sponsor.
